General information

The tournament is dated between years 1330 and 1400. All participants' equipment must fall within
that era. All tournament information is available on the web site [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] section Tournament
(Turnaj).

The tournament application is to be sent to the tournament officials via email to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
before the 15 of June 2012.

Along with the application a participation fee of 350CZK per participant is also to be deposited to the
account nr. 1716078123/0800 opened with Česká spořitelna a.s. In the case of foreign participants and
after prior agreement with the tournament officials only, the fee can be paid cash on site.

The archery events will be specified on site. The archery competition will be open to both bowmen
and crossbowmen. In case of significant crossbowmen participation a separate category will be created
for them.

Maul tournament

The maul tournament opening depends on the interest and soberness of the participants. If there is
interest, both individual and company tournaments can be opened.

Tournament Rules

1.

Arms and armor

Only fighters with adequate equipment will be allowed to participate in the tournament events. The
equipment must satisfy both historical (correspond to the equipment used between years 1330 - 1400)
and safety (qualitative) parameters.

All armour parts must form a consistent whole, combining armour parts from different periods falling
within the tournament bounds is not allowed.

No modified armour parts containing modern parts or materials (Kevlar, plastic) will be allowed, with
the exception of a jockstrap, which is recommended especially for knights.

The tournament officials reserve the right to assess all participants' arms and armour according to the
aforementioned rules, and to ban anyone from entering the tournament should his equipment be in
violation of these rules.

1.1

Knights equipment

The equipment of the knight must consist at least from:

Head - The head must be protected by an amply padded helmet with a visor covering the whole face.
A pot helmet corresponding to the time period of 1330 - 1400 can also be used when
combined with a salot or an iron skull. An aventail or a scale "drape", ideally padded, must be
a part of the helmet.

Neck - The neck and scruff must be protected by an ample padded collar (stand-alone or as a part of
the gambeson) and an aventail or a scale "drape" on the helmet (salot or iron skull if a pot
helmet is used).

Arms - The arms must be protected by either plate mail, leather armour with iron straps, or a long
sleeve of a chain mail combined with ample padding. Plate shoulder guards are recommended.
The hands must be protected by plate gauntlets covering all fingers. With older armour types
chain gauntlets can also be used (either stand-alone or as an integral part of the chain mail).

Legs - Thighs, knees and shins must be protected by plate armour, or leather armour with iron
segments. Calf protection is recommended. With older armour types chain mail covering the
whole leg can be used.

Body - Every knight must be equipped with a chain shirt. This must be complemented by an upper
layer in the form of a breastplate, brigantine or an upper gambeson in case of older armour
types.

The weapons allowed for a knight are single-handed sword combined with a shield, a longsword, a
spear at most 2m long, or a poleaxe at most 1.7m long.

1.2

Men-at-arms equipment

The men-at-arms armour consists at least from head protection in the form of an amply padded kettle-
hat, salot or an iron skull (a salot can only be used combined with an aventail or a scale "drape"),
padded neck guard (stand-alone or as a part of a gambeson), padded protection of the body and arms,
scale or chain (not just padded) gauntlets and padded protection of thighs and knees.

Recommended additions to the requirements stated above are plate elbow and knee guards and
additional body protection in form of a chain shirt or brigantine. Men-at-arms may also use plate leg
armour.

The weapons of men-at-arms are a single-handed sword or a cutlass combined with a shield or a
buckler, a spear, or a polearm, both at most 2.5m long.

Tournament events

The tournament events will be judged by appointed referees. For each event, three judges will be
appointed, one main and two assistant. The main referee's task will be to judging the current fight and
the particular hits, each of the assisting referees will judge his appointed combatant or side (in case of
group events) and will aid the main referee in deciding disputable or unclear situations.

The system of the particular events will be decided by the tournament officials on-site depending on
the number of participants.

2.1

Knights' tournament

In the knights' tournament two combatants will always step up with weapons decided beforehand.

The duel is won by the combatant who first gathers five points. If both combatants gather five points
at the same time, the duel ends in a draw.

A point is gained when a combatant hits his opponent. The hits will be judged by the referees
according to their intensity and location (glancing hits will not be awarded points by the referees).
The whole body including the face is a valid target. Only deliberate attacks to the groin are forbidden.

A point is also awarded if the opponent is disarmed, loses the weapon by his own mistake or if he falls
to the ground. If one of the combatants hits his opponent for example kneeling on one knee in a way
that he can immediately continue moving, the hit is considered valid. In the other case the hit is not
valid and his opponent is awarded a point.

All kinds of strokes including sword thrusts are allowed. Shield strikes are allowed, but are not
awarded points. Spears can only be used for thrusting, not for striking.

2.2

Men-at-arms tournament

The men-at-arms tournament is conducted in the same way as the knights' tournament.

All attacks targeting the face or groin are forbidden.

Thrusts are only allowed with spears (spears cannot be used for striking), polearms can be used only
for striking. Shield strikes are allowed, but are not awarded points.

2.3

Company tournament

The company tournament is entered by two three-man companies consisting of one knight and two
men-at-arms.

Only knight can use swords for thrusting, and only against other knights (men-at-arms cannot use a
sword for thrusting at all, and a knight cannot thrust at a man-at-arms).

A combatant is eliminated if he receives a hit that would render him unable of continuing the fight. If a
combatant does not acknowledge such hit by himself, the main referee can decide on his elimination,
and can stop the fight altogether in an extreme case. In case of a repeated transgression the main
referee can decide the match in favor of the other company.

Considering the differences in the combatants equipment individual hits will be judged differently,
meaning a hit that would eliminate a man-at-arms may not be considered enough to eliminate a knight.

2.4

Maul tournament

The maul tournament is entered by five-man companies with no distinction between knights and men-
at-arms.

Minimum equipment required for each participant is a gambeson, gauntlets, and a helmet (face
protection is not required). The participants enter armed with a shield and a wooden maul at most 90
cm long.

A combatant is eliminated by a maul hit to the head.

If there is interest, an individual maul tournament can be organized, with the rules specified on-site.

Suplemental information

1.

Camping

The tournament takes place on a meadow surrounded by pastures, fields and forests. An unpaved road
leads to the camping site itself, the last section going through a meadow.

The GPS coordinates of the camping site are 50.9511103N, 15.1055047E.

A small pond and a creek can be found about 100m off the camping site, making them ideal for the
hardier individuals looking to cool down after a hot day.

A part of the meadow will be cut for participant's tents. The officials will supply the participants with
wood, water, toilettes and most probably hay.

Medical supervision will be present during the tournament. A hospital is approximately 2.5 km away.

2.

The town of Frýdlant

The tournament takes place near the town of Frýdlant. The town's official web site is

The town is dominated by a castle, which after the battle of Bílá Hora (White Mountain) became a
property of a significant commander Albrecht of Valdštejn. The main attraction of the castle is a large
armory, which displays more than a thousand weapons, from which the oldest date to the half of 12-th
century and the most recent come from WW1. Both cold arms and firearms, hunting or military, are
displayed.
